:: iDea Labs ::: Catch up with your network of Social Networks

I played around with findmeon earlier today actually before seeing this article – and while it has a point – part of that can be substantiated through common identities – my problem I’m running into is how to archive all the data and RSS feeds properly in a usable format for the future – all of this data in so many place – in a world where sites can vanish in a blink is not good.

I do use suprglu – but yet I want more and most RSS feed readers or stream creators only go so far back so I can’t archive older data. In short I’m screwed.

There is a place for findmeon – but once they get past beta and make it easier to use such as adding all the big social sites in the list form the beginning and doing support for each that way instead of you coming up with all the information yourself.

For the die hard web 2.0 person this isn’t too difficult – but if my mom doesn’t have a chance forget it – it needs more polish

So I was wondering how other people interact with media these days – I seem to be watching more Internet TV then traditional cable or broadcast television.

Check out revision3 shows – especially diggnation and the cooking show ctrl-alt-chicken

Ok I took all my blogs – with the exception of SNN, and migrated them all into this page. Hopefully this will give a more concise reading experience to my friends, family, and suffering folks that read my writings.

I’m slowly adding all the old poetry and information from my past that I want archived online.

A few things I’ve noticed though – I built this page on the new blogger beta – and alot of services I was using in the past to post directly to my blog are not working. Hopefully the support will be there soon – the best I’ve seen was flickr who used the new authentication API to post directly to the blog.

For those folks that haven’t seen this new API and don’t want to use blogger beta – download flock – flock is a great browser for the new web – it’s built on top of firefox and integrates with gmail, flickr, del.icio.us, blogger, and many other services. I know if you configure your browser for flickr access it uses the new authentication API. Check it out – it’s cool, it’s interesting, it will kill an hour of your time at least.

RSS – great technology or a flop. In alot of ways it’s like the push technology developed by Netscape years ago – great in theory less so in practice.

I’m having trouble figuring out what exactly to do with my feeds. I want to send them off and remix them ala suprglu where I already host a site. I even have my personal domain sent to that page.

I want to archive and remix the data in other formats – but 99.9999% of all RSS programs are readers or feed generators. I don’t need a reader and I don’t need a feed generator – at least not until I get the next (whatever that is) accomplished.

Anyone have any programs for the programming challenged to manipulate RSS feeds beyond stream creation or reading?

No this is is not a review or recommendation post – the examining equipment posts cover the equipment I already own and what functions I wish to do with them.

Ever find that the equipment manuals are terrible or you just can not find a ye or no answer on how somehting functions?

That i my problem.

Buried in a closet downstairs is a wireless router that is not being used. In my new network design – I want to use it, but I need it to have NAT disabled so I can go between both segments with their real IP addresses. So I need it to act as a true wireless router and the manual says nothing about this type of function.

The router is a MN-700 Wireless b/g router by Microsoft. When I lived in Oregon it served the purpose for a couple years but got replaced when I moved back to Ohio. With my new network design though I’m going to have at least 2 wireless zones (2 more planned in the future when I have cash) . So I’m stuck on that question until I have time later to hook it all up and configure it. But the manual should have this information.

But what else am I going to do with it beyond complain about the lack of of text in the manual?

Well let’s look at the rest of the purpose of this machine (other machines mentioned we will go into detail in a later examinging equipment.

The MN-700 will ideally be put into a configuration such as the folllowing off the firewall

Wired Clients MN-700 Firewall
|
Wireless Clients |
Wireless Bridge
I will be uing WPA encryption on the Clients and the wireless bridge as this wireless network is going to be behind my main firewall (which has 4 interfaces) I want natting disabled since I’ll be coming through the firewall to the wired clients at the very least – and would like to be able to reach all the computers.

Why do I need to reach all the computers?

Remember the mantra to follow is central management and ease of use – while my network setup when we get through this whole series may not be the easiest to understand nor to configure. When we get to the end users they should not be able to see any impact on their normal usage and it should make everything easy and transparent. Hopefully it will also make everything more functional where the users are interacting with services they didn’t know existed on the network.

Being able to reach all the computers means that I can VNC (covered in a later article) across the network to any machine form any other machine I’m on (as long as I know the password.) This fulfills centralized management and since most my servers run headless (without a monitor attached) it allows me to administrate them without have the electric bill compounded by the electricity that a monitor would use.

I also have at least one computer on that segment where VNC communication is imperative and there is a file share on that same computer. The reason for this will be covered in a later article when I get to that computer.

What other functions will this router provide?

This router on top of his WPA encryption will be filtering client by mac address and not all of the clients will have a static IP address. So the router will also be the DHCP that services this network segment ( for the record there will be 2 other DHCP servers on the network and no I don’t want to go DHCP repeater services so I can have a central one). The DHCP pool is going to be wide enough for 20 addresses in case I get other remote device that need access via the secured wireless segment.

The router will allow for external managment so from my central desktop or laptop I can adjust or make any configuration changes necessary in a future adjustment.

I’m fairly sure this covers my working with this wireless router – I’ll have a follow up later on the MN-700 which will include screenshots of the interface.

While I already have a home network, looking at things to do with it online is a painful task. Unless I know what I am doing and have a topic to search on I can never seem to find anything new and interesting to do.

This is why I am starting this blog. I am going through an overhaul of my home network. Still not done rewiring hte house with CAT5 so I’ll be doing ome interesting wireless tricks. I believe in centralized management, and we are going to try to make everything as tranparent to the users on the the network as possible. These tips and tricks can be translated to networks of larger and smaller sizes.

Hopefully I will have something interesting to offer.

Here is the Google translated press release from nintendo in regards to the WII pricing (25,000 yen ( 215 US)) and the included accessories
