Category Archives: Sites I Use

Ok so I’m finally happy enough with the migration that I moved all the DNS settings over to my new web host and turned the old creeva.com back to creeva.blogspot.com.   As they say, breaking up is hard to do.   Hard for me since I had some functionality in the old blog that I was missing (until earlier today) in the new blog.

First of all, obviously I have moved to a sparser design.   I like zen-like simplicity.   No distractions and the meat in front of you on the plate.  Part of this reason is that moving from the blogger platform to the wordpress platform I couldn’tuse the same themes and I was being lazy when it came to the idea of converting the theme.   After being distraught and having issues over this fact I then decided I would make a new layout.  After coming to this conclusion I became happier and more excited about the new layout.   There are some more things to do but that will come with time.

The basic design things you will see is less widgets on the front page (and no advertising currently) I moved some of the functionality off to sub pages (something blogger didn’t support).

My subpages are across the top they are:

Random Quotes    -  These are things I’ve collected over time (this page may not make the grade long term)

About Me   -  A Random Self Observation
Security – Some of the Security I’ve enjoyed that I wrote myself

Music – Not finished – but is going to old information about the bands I play in

Photos – My photo album (sourced at flickr)

Videos – Videos I’ve made or uploaded – or just videos I like

Contact Me – My contact information

Links – Links to friends/

It’s late and I’ll get to writing up part 2 of how the new creeva.com works tomorrow.  The next part of this mini-series is which wordpress plug-ins I am using.

Some of you that use the RSS feed to read my site will notice a few changes.

I have embedded Adsense and Amazon Affiliate strings in the feed (and on the page) – we’ll see how well and or intrusive this becomes. This is more of a test then anything. My readership is too low to garner any money really so it’s more of a test on the speed and loading impact it will have on the site. If there is negligible it may stay – if it’s noticeable I will remove it.

That being said for the up to the minute RSS readers – they will be receiving what I am currently digging as it happens. Yes I realize that I do this in the web wandering dump, but that information is already up to 24 hours out of date since I added it before it’s imported into here.

Flickr photos are also being wrapped up in a nice little package with my 5 latest photos as their uploaded. This is more for me in the sense it will make me take more photographs. Once again these are archived within a single post on the site as it happens, just a little more visual stuff in the feed.

When I do major changes like this I will let you know and I will not surprise you.

Continuing slowly through my sites I use series I’ll go with one of the sites I’ve used the longest – Slashdot.

What is Slashdot (from wikipedia):

Slashdot, often abbreviated as /.[1], is a science, science fiction, and technology-related news website owned by SourceForge, Inc.. It features user-submitted and editor-evaluated current affairs news with a “nerdy” slant. Each story on the site has an Internet forum-style comments section attached; Slashdot was one of the first popular websites to include a commentary section in such a prominent manner.

The summaries for the stories are generally submitted by Slashdot’s own readers with editors accepting or rejecting these contributions for general posting. While Slashdot’s haphazard editorial style produced a unique voice in the pre-blog age, users frequently post criticisms of perceived arbitrary or biased editorial choices.

Though the site predates the modern concept of the weblog, Slashdot’s architecture is commonly compared to that of modern blogs. Slashdot is notable in that its commenting system is much more robust than most blogs, with threading and user moderation having been introduced before these were commonplace in modern weblog packages.

Officially, the name “Slashdot” was chosen to confuse those who tried to pronounce the URL of the site (“h-t-t-p-colon-slash-slash-slashdot-dot-org“)

I can say that I have been using it for roughly 9-10 years (depending on how early on I discovered it. For many years it was my primary geek news location. However in the last couple years that has started to waiver. I get my news now from sites like the previously mentioned Digg and other sites along the way. Slashdot moves too slow (which is not necessarily a bad thing) but gets boring when you are looking for quick news bites.

My last position (when I worked in the office) we had enough geeks there that we were actually banned for a couple days from slashdot by slashdot – because they thought we were launching a DoS attack on them. Just shows get a large large group of geeks together and they all think a like.

With the rise of digg is slashdot irrelevant? The legions of fans don’t seem to think so – going so far that diggers make fun of slashdotters and vice versa. If you are actually involved in the community the two are quite different. Slashdotters are passionate but Digg brings out more of a party care free atomsphere. I really don’t go to slashdot for the news anymore – I go for two things.

The first thing that I absolutely use as a reference point is the Ask Slashdot Section – this section allows you to post a question to the community and the community picks it apart or tells you unique answers that can be mostly quite helpful.

Which goes straight into the other reason I use slashdot – the commenting system. The fact that’s digg’s commenting system is broken (but they are fixing it soon) plus the attitudes difference makes slashdot’s comment section much more insightful and interesting then almost every other news board (to me at least).

The grandfather of the geek news sites will always have stories to tell and memories to live on. Let’s all hope it lives for a long long time.

I’m going to start a series on the main websites I use. Today I’m going to start this series with digg.com.

The first thing I can say is that you haven’t heard of Digg.com where have you been. If you are still a regular slashdot.org user and you’ve never heard of digg.com – your geek card is now revoked.

What is Digg (from wikipedia):

Digg is a community-based popularity website with an emphasis on technology and science articles, recently expanding to a broader range of categories such as politics and entertainment. It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control.

News stories and websites are submitted by users, and then promoted to the front page through a user-based ranking system. This differs from the hierarchical editorial system that many other news sites employ.

Digg history (from wikipedia):

Digg started out as an experiment in November 2004 by Kevin Rose, Owen Byrne, Ron Gorodetzky, and Jay Adelson (who serves as CEO), all of whom currently play an active role in the management of the site.

Digg, Version 1.6

Digg, Version 1.6

“We started working on developing the site back in October 2004,” Kevin Rose told ZDNet[1] “We started toying around with the idea a couple of months prior to that, but it was early October when we actually started creating what would become the beta version of digg. The site launched to the world on December 5th 2004.”

Kevin Rose’s friend David Prager (The Screen Savers, This Week in Tech) originally wanted to call the site “Diggnation”, but Kevin wanted a simpler name. He chose the name “Digg”, because users are able to “dig” stories, out of those submitted, up to the front page. The site was called “Digg” instead of “Dig” because the domain name “dig.com” was previously registered. “Diggnation” would eventually be used as the title of Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht’s weekly podcast.

The original design was free of advertisements, and was designed by Dan Ries. As Digg became more popular, Google AdSense was added to the website. In July 2005, the site was updated to “Version 2.0″. The new “version” featured a friends list, the ability to “digg” a story without being redirected to a “success” page, and a new interface designed by web design company Silverorange [2]. The site developers have stated that in future versions a more minimalist design will likely be employed. On Monday June 26, 2006 version 3 of Digg was released with specific categories for Technology, Science, World & Business, Videos, Entertainment and Gaming as well as a View All section where all categories are merged.

Digg has grown large enough that submissions sometimes create a sudden increase of traffic to the “dugg” website. This is referred to by some Digg users as the “Digg effect” and by some others as the site being “dugg to death”. However, in many cases stories are linked simultaneously on several popular bookmarking sites. In such cases, the impact of the “digg effect” is difficult to isolate and assess.

On August 27, 2007 Digg altered their main interface

Now that I’ve given you the wikipedia history let’s give you some of mine with site – I’ve used digg for over a year and half as my geek news source – slashdot moved to slow for me to get enough of my geek news (I know I’m sad) – so I discovered digg after hearing coworkers and friends talk about it.

I’ve submitted a few stories to digg and I’ve even managed to get one on the front page. This is my sad sad little geek bragging right.

The whole point and problem of digg is that popular stories rise to the top and less interesting stories disappear. If your not using and RSS feed you will miss alot of things that may otherwise have interested you. If your interested in zombie dogs to working lego wii’s these all end up on digg.com.

Now I’m sure I’ve given you all information you already knew but I figured I would start with one of the easiest and most popular sites on the net.

I already had someone ask me why am I bothering with Yahoo Answers and why are they on my blog. Well the reason is simple I enjoy troubleshooting. That’s why I enjoyed when I did work phone tech support, it allowed for the largest challenge with minimal feedback. This is even more so. Because of that I enjoy the game of it.

I wish there was a way to just pull an RSS feed of the answers I give, but as of right now it’s a manual process of pulling out the data and copy and pasting it in. I would prefer to have my answers and thought processes captured to this site as part of my lifestream. It allows people to see how I think and how I would handle certain situations.

I’m sure I’ll eventually get bored with it so I doubt I’ll be doing it in a year so the posts will disappear – but for the moment I’m finding it interesting.

How can i stopp web sides not suitable for kids?

View Creeva's Profile

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

As much as I’m against censorship….

You can get a digital filtering program that you can setup to allow or disallow any sites you feel are in the right viewership for you children.

The one that comes off the top of my head is net nanny – you get this type of software and it allows monitoring as well as web site restriction.

Be aware that if your children are savy or teenagers then they most likely know how to bypass these filters.

Am I right to susspect that there is a software that allows a person to break the password of another’s e-mail

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

It depends on the mail server -and if they can get the password file off that server – but yes such software does exist.

An easier method would be to install a keylogger on the target if you know them personally and just read the output of them typing in their password.

Better yet if it’s webmail – and they save their passwords in their browser unprotected there are ways you can research online to show you how to dump those passwords.

If it’s in a local application like outlook you can always unhide the ****** passwords with a programs that are freely available online.

I am getting answers which I do not understand?

I have a network consisting of a server, a speeedstream 4100 modem, a linksys router, a linksys ethernet switch, and six dell computers running XP Pro. My internet provider is ATT/Yahoo.
My home page setting on the computers is Yahoo.

Five of the computers can connect with the internet.

All of the computers can connect with the network.

I cannot figure out why the one computer will not connect with the internet.

My understanding of all of this is limited.

My answers contain such things as follows, which I do not understand:
MAC address filtering HOW AND WHERE
IP address filtering HOW AND WHERE
DHCP server HOW AND WHERE
ipconfig HOW AND WHERE
firewall setting HOW AND WHERE
tcp/ip corruption HOW AND WHERE

Also, could this happen because my modem is not in bridge mode? I have some information stating that my modem should be in bridge mode (with the internet light off) or some sort of interference or conflict could occur. Could this be a factor?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

MAC address filtering – this is in your linksys router – if you did not set this up in there originally it’s not a default setting – check your router manual at www.linksys.com

IP address filtering – this is in your linksys router – if you did not set this up in there originally it’s not a default setting – check your router manual at www.linksys.com

DHCP server – if all your computers can see eachother – this is a non issue don’t worry about it you have an IP address.

Firewall setting – this is in your windows control panel – start-settings- control panel – windows firewall

TCP/IP corruption – possible but highly unlikely since you can get to other machines on your network.

For IPConfig – this is the information we really need to solve this problem

Go to Start- Run and type CMD

at this point type “ipconfig /all”

What you are concerned about when looking at this primarily is that the default gateway address (numbers) should look identical on the working and non working machine. The other thing to make sure is filled and working correctly is the DNS Server addresses (numbers) should be identical on the working and non working machines.

After you have this information we can help you further.

How to share folder for more than 5 users in windows xp home edition?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

You can’t it’s a limitation of the operating system – Microsoft felt if you were in a network with more then 5 PC’s that need to share files that you should have XP Pro.

Since this is a limitation of the network stack only allowing 5 simultaneous connection (I don’t believe it’s just file sharing) so I don’t know if setting up an FTP server will bypass this issue.

I’m currently studying at IT Futures (formally Britannia IT Solutions)…?

I’ve been there for almost 4 months and still havent yet sat an exam. I’m aiming to sit for my Windows XP exam, but it’s taking me ages. I sit trial exams every day, as well as going through the Microsoft Press text book. I’m still not ready and it’s frustrating me. Is there any tips for how i should study for this? Who’s been in the similar position?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

Practice tests – I can say that if you’ve never taken a test it is not as bad as you can imagine (unless your taking the CISSP)

The best book I used was the exam cram book – the study guide that is soft cover. It will say exam cram and be red to help narrow your search.

Is it possible to mix diffrent manufacturers when installing a wireless system ?

I have a linsky system and wish to expand do i have to keep to linsky or do they mix and match ?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

You can mix and match (I have 2 wireless router – D-Link – Linksys- and Microsoft) at home.

You will loose the additional manufacturer speed – ie if you are using linksys routers with linksys nics and using speed boost technology (I’m not) but otherwise it will work fine – just set them on different wireless channels to bypass interference.

PS 2 Internet Hookup Problems?

We would like to hook-up our PS2 with a built-in Netwrk Adapter. We have Verizon/yahoo DSL service at 764kbs. Our modem is a Westell Dual Modem 6100. We are using our Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop PC and a wired Nextech N4PRoute for DSL connections. Every time we go to set up the connection the error message on the PS2 says no cennection detected. My questions are do we need to delete our failed information from the PS 2Memory card and could the card itself create a problem. Also the modem has a firewall built-in and a router. Do we need to set-up sepearate connections for the PC and the PS2? Also the I saw something about a “bridge” setting for the modem and not a PPoE(??)? Anyone that can help with our problems would be greatly appreciated. It has been a little frustrating for us. Also anyone that has hook-up their PS2 that has any other suggestions would be appreciated. Perhaps we can hook-up the PC with the USB and the PS2 with ethernet cable directly to the modem. Help!!!

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

Make sure that the PS2 has a link light on the back of it where the network cable plugs in.

Delete you configuration and try using DHCP settings.

Sound out of Sync – What is a codec?

I just bought a new video camera that records to a .Mp4.
If I watch the videos on the camera, they are fine. When I transfer them to my computer (just copying) and run them thru Quicktime, the sound is out of sync. When I tried to run in Windows Media player, it complained about not having a codec. I found a codec online and downloaded it. The videos now work fine on Windows Media Player with no sync problems. Can someone please help me understand the following:
1- What is a codec?
2- Does Quicktime use different codecs than WMP
3- Are some codecs better than others
4- If so, which should I be using
5- Why is it that syncing audio and video is difficult

View Creeva's Profile

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

1. A codec is a decoder/encoder for different type of media files – diffferent codecs can do different function slike smaller file sizes or higher quality through upscaling.

2. You can add codecs to quicktime – but by default they use different ones.

3. Yes – but for different reasons you should specifiy your needs.- most people at least load dvix, xvid, quicktime, treal player, wmv, mp3..etc.etc. Do a seach in google for “codec pack” this should fix your issues.

4. Unless your camera can load other codecs (probably not) you will have to stick with what it is using.

5. In reality syncing audio and video isn’t difficult – the two things that can cause problems are wrong codecs like you’ve seen or a computer that’s too slow for the media. The codec thing while yuo may think is something simple it really isn’t – let’s use another example:

You have a toyota car and the tire goes flat – the simple answer is change the tire – but the tire you have goes to a Semi truck – though the tire is still round and with enough hassle and macguyverism you can get it onto the toyota – the car will still not run right.

Codecs make sure you have the proper format (tire) to play your video (fit on your car)

Can You Network A Vista Laptop and an XP Desktop?

Ok, I have a few questions.
First, is it possible to network together a Vista Laptop and an XP Desktop?
Also, can they share internet?
And, can they network together using Wi-Fi, or is a cable the best way?
I have my Windows XP Pentium 4 Desktop in my room, and my mom’s Windows Vista Laptop is right on the other side of the wall. She has the router over on her side, and I don’t get any internet. I have Charter Broadband cable, and it runs through a RT31P2 Router. The Router has 3 Ethernet slots, and 2 phone slots.

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

1. Yes
2, Yes
3, Either – but you get better speed with wired networking in most cases.
4. Get a wireless router/access point you can plug into her router and a wireless card for your computer (or run wires) and you should be good to go.

Computer Case myth?

Sometimes people have overheating problems and they are told to open up their case. But the question I have is, is that really recommended? See I have heard before that by having your case open, you have less chance of the inside of the case getting as hot as when it is closed since you have a lot of cold air going to the motherboard. BUT I have also heard that it is better to keep the case closed, as it focuses all the cool incoming air into the case and it stays on top of the components (the motherboard, processor, etc.) and pushes the hot air out. Which is the best way to keep a case? I mean cases come so you can close them. So what do you all think?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;I leave my case open – but my case design is terrible – it all depends on what kind of airflow you get through your case – I have a crappy video card that over heats after a few hours and needs replaced – it takes longer to have problems if the case is off.

However if you have a decently designed case and no problems I would leave the case cover on.

I have also seen some companies running as many as 20 virtual servers on one piece of server hardware – what is the power consumption compared to 20 servers.

It’s all about need and cost – they do things like this to keep cost down – and yes they do figure in power consumption into the cost.

The other day lightning struck and my power went out while the conmputer was on. Ever since then is will randomly resart about once every hr. Are there any quick fixes for this????

Most likely at least one transistor is fried – this means ahrdware replacement.

Maybe your lucky and the computer is just overheating – open up the case – turn the computer on and make sure all teh fans are spinning.

How do I secure my network when I sign on wirelessly at my home and my work disables my microsoft firewall?

I don’t want to have an unsecure connection and have someone hack into my work computer…and since they’ve disabled my firewall, i’m not sure what do, the firewall is only active at work.

View Creeva's Profile

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;Make sure your home wireless network uses WPA encryption and for further security make sure it allows only the MAC addresses of machines you want to allow on your home network.

If you have a home internet router this will take the place of the windows firewall.

I do find it odd that your work set your firewall to be disabled away from work – check and make sure you don’t have symantec’s firewall installed. Regardless my previous paragraph should suffice. Software firewalls for the desktop came into being since home users rarely had firewalling routers at home.

Hello questions for the week?

1. What type of organizations could benefit from DHCP?
2. What type of organization would be better off using static IP addresses only?
3. Within a single organization, what types of machines would need static IP addresses instead of being configures by DHCP?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;1. Any organization can benefit from DHCP from 1-1 million users – it saves time going around and configuring every machine manually and the administration of making sure there are no conflicting IP addresses or unused address space.

2. Any organization can benefit from static IP addresses – though it is normally more manageable the smaller the network so sub 100 – the reason for the benefit is that it gives you more granular control over the users and the addresses they use. The problem with static IP addresses is administrative overload and machine can not move easily from subnet to subnet. DHCP allows moving from subnet to subnet more easily.

3. Trick question since all machines could use DHCP if you DHCP reservations setup -with DHCP reservations the DHCP server would match up the MAC address and make sure the machine always had the same IP address the same as static. However if you are referring to the fact that some machines need to have the same IP address all of the time for accessability it would be a server.

What’s The i at the beginning of Apple produce ??

View Creeva's Profile

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

it’s a marketing term

When the first iMac came out some marketers put it there to symbolized it worked with the internet. Other stories say Steve Jobs just like the flow and said the I meant it was something personal.

Since then they released the iphone and ipod and many other i names – it has come to mean (according to Jobs) I as in myself – which Jobs feels gives it an intimate and personal touch.

But beyond that it’s just marketing since we all now associate isomething with apple.

Are there any games i could play multiplayer via ad hoc or wifi network?

I have an existing wireless network. just looking for some multiplayer games i can download and play via wifi with my laptop. so i could play with my classmates during our long boring class hours. thank you. =)

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

Any game that does not need a server on the internet can be played via a TCP ad hoc network.

Things like MMORPG’s can not be played since they need a central server. Most other games allow for a peer to peer session which would work fine with an ad hoc network.

Question bout router,?

If a router receives a packet that it does not know how to forward, what type of route must be configured on the router to prevent the router from dropping it?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

If a network device of ANY type doesn’t have a route to get to a certain destination it always heads out to it’s default gateway or in some parlance default route.

Why should a network diagram be kept current?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

If it’s out of date there is no method for troubleshooting.

You could be trying to test IP addresses that are no longer there – or wonder where the missing equipment is if it got changed out.

Keeping a network diagram current literally saves you hours that you would otherwise spend tracking things down.

What compact disc is the best for media backup?

I’m trying to clear out some old stuff on my external harddrive. Like what brand and memory size….I’ve tried the dvd-r memorex dvds but I can’t use it as a backup – it won’t let me.
I would use Dynex 700MB CD-Rs but the memory is so small. I’ve got like100GB worth of media and about a quarter of it I don’t watch often.
help please…

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

90% of CD-Rs are 700 MB – you can get some online that are 810 MB but you need to make sure your CD Burner supports it.

For nuder 30.00 you can get a DVD burner these days – if you figure that a normal DVD can hold 4.7 gigs (meaning you only need 25 to backup your whole harddrive) or 9.4 gigs for dual layer (though I would stick with single layer for best compatibility) it is definetly worth it to upgrade to a DVD burner.

Beyond that – Brands? – these usually don’t matter – the more you pay sometimes will give you better quality to make them last longer but I can say I use alot of bargain basement CDR’s and DVDR’s – the best thing I can say to look for is a silk screened top instead of a shiny top – this can lead to a little more scratch resistance.

I heard of highestpaidsurverys.com is good.. just wondering if anyone has tried any!

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

Some will actually pay you – but then you do sign away your email address to their database. They use this to sell to marketers since they then know what you like, don’t like, and what you are willing to buy.

Personally I think it’s more pain then what you get out of it – but it’s all up to you and whether the spam is worth it.

The reputation comes up when people will say if they actually pay you or not -

Why can’t my computer install many of the MS updates? Do I need them?

oAnswers.blockUserEnabled = true;

Do you have a legitimate copy of windows?

If you don’t you’ll be blocked from installing them because of the Windows Genuine Advantage program – this checks for illicit copies of windows (sometimes it was the reseller not you personally) and refuse to install some updates – but allow others.

What is the error message you get?

I would say a majority of the patches are relevant and important.

I ran across this article and it posed an interesting question:

Can you have too many profiles?

“…..How many people have social networking profiles with multiple services? MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, and others? Can someone have too many? And of course, can it hurt their career potential to have one? This topic has been covered by many, but I revisit it because it speaks to the idea of self-reporting versus objective data determining career potential…..”

More detail from the author is available from the site – but here is the comment I left and my view on it.

Yes you can have too many profiles – but it matters how you manage and maintain them.

For example –

I use linkedin for business contacts.

I use myspace for online and offline friends – I have to know them BEFORE I add them to my friends list.

I use facebook for family and friends that I’m willing to get a bit more personal with.

I also use about 30 other sites – and yes these can effect your online reputation – if you go to my blog www.creeva.com you’ll see on the left hand side all the major networks I am a member of using my lijit widget to consolidate them all.

Having them all consolidated and searchable makes me much more aware of what I post since I know i have to accountable for everything.

I don’t normally include profiles for sites where I tried the service and stopped using it since there will be very minimal application.

It’s not a question in some ways of how many public online profiles you have as much as it is are you aware what is happening to the data.

Since I dump all the data into my blog it makes it kind of easy for a potential employer to read up about me. I am aware of that – I’m also comfortable enough that I realize if someone doesn’t want me for a job because of one or more of my personal beliefs – then I didn’t want to work for them anyways.

Sometimes I get personal on my blog and sometimes I get techinical. It’s a matter of what I’m writing and I’m not too worried about the audience since I’m here to share information not hide it away.

I’m one of those rare people that while i believe in personal privacy I think I have alot to share and having it in my public profiles means that my friends, family, co-workers, and potential employers can be aware of it and discuss it ahead of time before it becomes an issue – or they can decide it’s a non-issue.

I realize that I’m not the most eloquent all the time. I also realize that some of my readers would prefer I stuck on topic. These are just the things that run and scamper through my mind.

  • Trends toward device integration

    Asked by Tony Rich

    Your Public Answer:

    “I always recommend using the best device for the task at hand. Integrated devices are great for smaller businesses that either can’t afford the additional security or the cost out weighs the benefit. On the other hand when the benefits outweigh the cost it is better to get a individual devices that can handle the proper functions. One of the main problems with integrated devices is that you usually loose some form of functionality. To get all these functions into one device it takes much more additional overhead in CPU and memory so companies usually strip out some of the higher AV detection – or the IDS detection is sub par. While the devices may still function for you adequately enough – it matters the functions that were stripped and your needs – you definetly gain a better security posture and architecture overall with dedicated devices.”
