Vermilion Community Music Association’s Concert Band performed for the arrival of the Christmas Tree Ship in Vermilion, OH yesterday. While the sounds recorded night not be as cohesive as you are used to from the Vermilion Community Band, please be kind and remember that we were essentially sight reading music with a small percentage of our members in attendance. I can also say for me personally it was way too early in the morning for me to playing.

The temperature was below freezing and the musician’s are lucky their instruments did not get stuck to their faces when they initially started to perform. If you are interested in seeing the Vermilion Community Band in true form we have two concerts coming up in the next week. Please visit the VCMA Website for more information. If you are interested in joining the Vermilion Community Concert Band please contact them via the website under the contact us link.

I found pictures of the VCMA at the event here:

Here are the pictures they had (also the one at the beginning of the post):

Since I’ve been doing the community band thing this year it turns out this next week I have four concerts.

This Saturday (December 1st) 10:30am-12:00pm – I will be playing at Exchange Park in Vermilion, OH with the Vermilion Community Band.

Next Tuesday I’ll be performing with the Ashland Community Band at the Ashland Univ at University Campus at 7:30 PM – it is a joint concert with the Ashland University Jazz Orchestra.

Next Thursday I’ll be performing with the Vermilion Community Band again at the Inn at Chapel Park at 7:30 PM.

Finally next Saturday I’ll be finishing the winter concert season with a performance again with the Vermilion Community Band for a Concert at Midway Mall in Elyria, OH. The concert starts at 7:00 PM.

I’ll be playing third trumpet in all the concerts. This is no longer high school so it’s not anything derogatory anymore. I really have no interest in playing first part in any of these bands. I can say getting back into playing my tone and tongueing have greatly improved. Probably better then when I was playing in high school or college.

I’m fairly certain I’ll be sticking with this going forward since I had forgotten how important music is to my life.

UPDATED

December 1st’s concert is recorded here.

This is part of my life notes series

This was my first Woolybear Festival since the year 2000, before I moved to Oregon.  It was an experience and the first time that I ever heard of where the local band festival was on a different weekend then  the Woolybear.

It was entertaining riding on the alumni float and playing away.  I did manage to see an old friend from high school in the crowd.  Ironically my ex-girlfriend was standing next to him trying not to be seen (she wasn’t hiding from me per say but the entire alumni band since I heard she had a falling out a few years previous).

I did manage to yell at a few people that I knew in the crowd for not coming up and joining the band, since they had marched in high school.

All in all it was good to be back and playing.

This is part of my life notes series

This was my first chance back to march with the alumni band since 2000. I felt honored to march under David Henry – the band director I marched under in High School. I was in his final class before retirement.  It was good to march in the Vermilion High School Marching Band Festival again.

The craziest thing was when we were during the pre-show getting ready to play the Star Spangled Banner with all of the assembled bands, Dick Goddard started singing the Star Spangled Banner himself.   Now we just stood at attention while this was going on and listened through his rendition.   He had sounded drunk or heavily medicated during his performance.  I can’t say that authoritatively though.

At the end of his “singing” Mr. Joseph Price the current band director who was leading his last festival as the band director before retirement started off all the bands playing the star spangled banner.   Out of all the Band Festivals I’ve marched in Vermilion (10 I think in total) this year was the strangest.
